The UAE’s amended traffic law got effective on 1st July 2017. The new traffic law is believed to reduce the number of casualties on the roads. Although the law seems harsher with tough punishments for dangerous offences, it is aimed at making roads safer.
Other changes that are likely to improve road safety are higher fines for higher speeds, confiscation of vehicles for various offences, black points, etc.
These are the latest regulations, fines and black points for a wide range of traffic violations.
- The new traffic law mandates that children below the age of four should be given a child seat, and compulsory buckling up of all passengers.
- Providing child seat and compulsory buckling up of passengers is the responsibility of drivers. Failure to fasten seat belt will cost the driver Dh.400 apart from four black points.
- Usage of phones or other distractions when driving will lead to a fine of Dh.800 and four black points.
- Reckless driving can lead to confiscation of vehicle for 60 days, a fine of Dh.2000 and 23 black points.
- Jumping the red light can lead to confiscation of vehicle for 30 days, a fine of Dh.1000 and 12 black points.
- Driving a vehicle with expired registration and insurance will lead to confiscation of vehicle for 7 days, fine of Dh.500, and four black points.
- In case of speeding (more than 80kph), fines can go upto Dh.3000, with 23 black points, and confiscation of vehicle for 60 days.
Apart from these, various other penalties have been introduced, with the police patrols across the country ready to implement regulations strictly. The Traffic Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi announced that they have already begun implementing the amended federal traffic law.
